There are many
muscles in your neck and they contract to accomplish two basic functions -
rotation of the head in relation to your torso, and flexion of your head
in relation to your torso. Neck flexion takes place in four main
directions - forward, to either side, and to the rear - as well as the
myriad of subdirections between these four main poles.
The main muscles of the
neck at each side of the front of the neck are the sternocleido mastoid
muscle, and at the back of your neck, the trapezius, which is an upper
back muscle, which inserts at the upper point nearly at the base of your
skull. |
