Most weight gain products provide about 400 calories per 100g of powder, so when mixed in water you get 400 calories and when mixed in about 2/3pint of skim milk you get around 530 calories.

As you should be eating around 6 evenly sized meals per day, you should aim to get around 1/6 of your daily calories in a serving of weight gain. For a person on 3,600 calories a day this would be 600 calories per meal, which is 150g of powder in water, or about 120g of powder in skim milk.

Whilst weight gains can be used long term as part of your normal diet, they are best used in 4-6 week cycles whilst gaining significant weight, followed by around a 2 week break where you would change to a low calorie protein supplement.

Serving Timings
A weight gain is treated as a full meal and should therefore be taken 21/2 to 3 hours apart from another meal, so for example, if you had breakfast at 7am, you could take a weight gain drink at 10:30am and lunch at 1:30pm.

A weight gain is an ideal meal to take immediately after a workout, even for those not trying to gain weight.

How to Take It
Weight gains can be taken in milk, juice, or water with most of them generally taken in either skim milk or water. If they are being used after a workout, then water is recommended as they are far more rapidly absorbed in water than milk.

Some products use instantised whey and mix easily in a shaker bottle, others may need a hand blender. Thin mixes suit those with a smaller appetite, whilst thicker mixes will benefit those with a larger appetite.

How to Use Weight Gains: I have bought a 10 lb tub of N large 2 and I have read conflicting opinions as to when to take it. The tub says that it can be taken post workout yet I have read that it should only be taken as a meal replacement and not post work out.
Is there anything wrong with taking it post workout or should I have something faster digesting

Answer

Nowadays there are specific post workout shake recovery drinks that have a much faster digesting form of protein and carbs that would be highly unsuitable most of the day but can really speed up recovery after training. That would definitely be the absolute ideal combination but if you are limited by cash any liquid weight gain formula is far better suited to post workout than whole food for instance. Plenty of people have gotten great results from using products such as N Large both as between meal supplements and as a post workout drink. If you can afford a seperate recovery drink then you will probably see increased results in less time but you'll still be getting a marked improvement using a weight gainer, especially if mixed with water and avoiding slow digesting milk as a mixer.
