What is Keto-Isocaproate?
Ketoisocaproate is an anti-catabolic compound - a compound that aids muscle
growth (anabolism) by limiting the bodies ability to break down protein from
the muscle cell (catabolism). Alpha-Ketoisocaproate is a keto acid of the branched
chain amino acid Leucine and is a popular addition to formulas developed as
natural anabolics and or anti-catabolics. The branched chain keto acids are
very similar to branched chained amino acids other than the fact that they posses
a keto acid group rather than an amino acid group.
What Are The Benefits of Ketoisocaproate?
The primary benefit of KIC is that it aids the body into a state of
muscle anabolism (muscle growth) and away from a catabolic (muscle wasting state)
thus aiding your ability to build lean and good quality muscle tissue. This
makes it an ideal supplement to use by both male and female athletes aiming
to increase recovery rates and develop quality lean muscle tissue.
More About KIC
Since all high intensity muscle building resistance training rockets
the body into a stress catabolic state, Ketoisocaproate is of supreme value
to any hard training athlete. KIC became a supplement of interest when a Dr
Steve Nissen began researching the amino acid Leucine and how supplementing
affects muscle growth. Nissen and colleagues discovered the important active
component in animal muscle was KIC.
Your muscles are made up of millions of individual muscle cells - all muscles
in your body. Whenever you exercise these cells are subjected to very high volumes
of stress. You will actually be causing certain types of damage into your muscle
cells with every training session. Due to this damage your body will lose vital
proteins from these cells, until several days later when the cells are repaired.
This is the catabolic state where your body loses protein from the cells.
Imagine your muscle cells as being like a bath and the water that is full in
the bath is your protein levels within the muscle cells. When you cause this
damage to the muscle cell, the water (protein) drains out, and fast. KIC works
similar to HMB in that it actually plugs the leak in your muscle cells. This
leads to greater muscle gains and strength gains, alongside a reduction in muscular
damage during periods of intense training. Experts believe that KIC is actually
mostly effective when combined with HMB (beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate).
There is very little substantiated evidence to show Keto-isocaproate's effectiveness
when used entirely on it's own - unless very large doses are administered.
Usage Indications
Standard doses of KIC when stacked with HMB tend to be in the 50 - 100mg range
for every 1g (1000mg) of HMB. Therefore results are typically seen with 150
- 300mg of KIC alongside 3 grams of HMB.
These days KIC is being combined in potent doses with Leucine and Glycine-l-arginine
for very beneficial results at the heavy gram dosage.
What Can I Expect To See From KIC Supplementation?
Results can be seen from KIC administration alongside HMB use within
2 - 3 weeks. Most users experience a positive effect on strength within 10 -
12 days and a subsequent increase in muscle size and density.
What should I use it with?
KIC should be used in combination with HMB and a diet rich in protein with a
high biological value (such as whey).
