WHAT IS GUARANA?
Guarana is made from the ground up seeds of an amazonian jungle shrub and
contains the active ingredient caffeine at about two and a half times the
quantity than found in the coffee bean. Guarana inhibits platelet aggregation (thining
of the blood, much like aspirin) as well as possible alleviation of migranes and
diarrhea (due to it's diuretic effect).
Because Guarana is a different form of caffeine, not as popularly available,
it can be used as an alternative fresh stimulant for those who normally use
regular caffeine. This is why it is a popular choice in many sports supplements.
Essentially consistent use of caffeine down regulates our bodies receptors,
almost making it immune to the stimulatory effects of caffeine, much the same as
any drug used constantly.
HOW MUCH SHOULD I USE?
As with regular caffeine an effective dose is 200 - 300mg so the guarana
would have to be standardized to contain a ligitimate amount of caffeine to have
a worthwhile effect. As with any stimulatory drug, cycling it's use is probably
the wisest option and never becoming too heavily reliant upon it as a workout
aid - save it for when it really is of use.
