What is Epimedium? Epimedium is a genus of twenty-one related plant species, native to china and has been used as an ornamental herb in asia and the mediterranean regions. There are various species which include Epimedium sagittatum, Epimedium brevicornum, Epimedium wushanense, Epimedium koreanum, and Epimedium pubescens that have been used for medical purposes for hundreds of years. The name Yin Yang Huo roughly translates as "licentious goat plant"
and explains why supplement companies have adopted the name Horny Goat Weed. Epimedium has also been shown to be used successfully in the treatment of kidney, joint, liver, and back disorders. More About Epimedium What the studies do highlight is that in animal studies, Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium) acts as an adaptogen (other adaptogens include cordyceps, rhodiola, ashwagandha, and ginseng), by elevating levels of epinephrine, serotonin (feel good hormone) and dopamine when levels of these are low. This increases energy levels and promotes feelings of well being. Equally this supplement also decreases levels of the stress hormone cortisol when it is elevated. And on top of that Epimedium also acts to prevent adrenal exhaustion, while simultaneously boosting testosterone levels and thyroid levels in men and women. This combination effect has a very positive influence on the sex drive of both sexes. Animal studies using epimedium have shown a reduction in bone breakdown, an
increase in muscle mass, and a loss of body fat-each of which may be linked
to the observed return of abnormal cortisol levels back to normal values (and
rhythm). In a series of studies conducted in humans and animals by Chinese researchers,
immune-system function was directly suppressed and bone loss was accelerated,
by using high-dose synthetic cortisol (glucocorticoid drugs). Subsequent administration
of epimedium extract reduced blood levels of cortisol and improved immune immune-system
function (in the humans) and slowed bone loss and strengthened bones (in the
animals). Epimedium (Horny Goat Weed) can of course be stacked with other testosterone
enhancing supplements, especially in the male. These being such things as Bulgarian
Tribulus and Zinc Monomethionine.
