WHAT IS MCT AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
MCT stands for medium chain triglyceride. They are purely saturated, medium
length fatty acid. They, however, contain the unique property that enables them
to be quickly converted to energy or ketones in the body. Normally fat must
bebroken down, combined with a protein, shuttled through the lymph system to the
liver, broken down further into free fatty acids, which are then either stored
as body fat or converted to glucose and used as fuel. MCT can however, enter the
blood stream directly and as stated, used immediately for energy, very similar
to normal carbohydrate. MCT may be beneficial for high endurance athletes
and those on a ketogenic diet.
There are 9 calories for every 1 gram of MCT (the same as regular fat.)

Question |
MCT: My son wants to start using Sci-MX Lean Grow MRF to build some extra muscle weight. As we have a history of high Triglycerides in the male side of the family (my son is only 18 and hasn t been tested for this yet) with early age deaths because of this condition, would these sort of products be a dangerous thing for him to take |

Answer |
Angela products containing MCT, medium chain triglycerides are generally not treated the same as high density triglycerides as we normally mean them. Many people on fat-restricted diets can continue to eat MCT's and purified fish oils, including the essential fatty acids DHA and EPA. In general you will find that many doctors and nutritionists actively prescribe these types of fatty acids which can counter high triglyceride conditions. However as each medical condition may vary in severity we would advise that you show the product ingredients to a GP or specialist first as it may be that there is some unique condition in this regard. For people with a genetic trend towards high blood fats your son may wish to begin with a low carbohydrate pure protein powder which offers the benefits of enhanced muscle growth but without the addition of excess fats or carbohydrates. In general the first macronutrient people need to increase for athletic purposes is high quality protein. High protein, low carbohydrate diets, as long as they contain adequate fruit and vegetables are generally the most advisable diets for those with high blood triglyceride conditions anyway as high starches and sugars will lead to increased blood fats. Ask your son to look at protein shakes such as Peptide Fusion, Pro Peptide, Metabolic Drive, Instant Whey, etc which are ideal for muscle development with positive improvements in blood triglyceride levels. You may also wish to look at a healthy fats supplement such as Udos Choice oil blend or Olio for example which contain the fats that lower blood triglycerides. |
