PLANT EXTRACTS
Plant extracts are not nutrients, nor are they essential to human chemistry.
Nonetheless they are an important part of sports and health nutrition and have
been included in our diets for thousands of years. Plant extracts fall into
two main groups, herbs and plant sterols and both can have significant drug
like effects on the body.
Herbs include such things as ephedra (popular in thermogenic fat loss products),
ginseng (a popular sports ergogenic) and through to such things as gotu kola
(a mental relaxant). They are part of a plant, be it berries, leaves, bark or
roots and are usually standardised for the effective ingredient.
Plant Sterols are chemicals closely related to human hormones and are considered
supplements only because they exist naturally within foods we eat. However,
for the health food market they are usually chemically created and placed in
supplements at hugely greater dosages than could possibly be eaten through the
diet. An example would be the pro-hormone supplement 19-nor which is found in
trace amounts in certain tubers.
There are no recommendations for plant extracts in the diet. They are very
goal orientated products and as such should only be taken with a specific objective
in mind. You will not eat a significant level of herbs or plant sterols in a
normal diet, they are only obtained through supplementation.
