HELPFUL FATS
Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT)
MCT's are unique in that irrespective of how much of them you eat they will
not be stored as bodyfat, as they are not processed by the body's normal fat
storing mechanisms. MCT are found in many sports supplements. They cannot be
stored as fats in the traditional way and are an excellent source of energy,
especially on a low carbohydrate or zero carbohydrate diet as they really do
supply energy like a carbohydrate, without stimulating insulin or glucose rises.
Studies have shown that when MCT's account for 50+% of a persons calories,
fat is burned in preference to muscle tissue. Again this is a very important
nutrient partitioning effect that has been utilised by many on the dieting down
and removal of excess bodyfat whilst trying to increase or spare muscle tissue.
MCT oils are manufactured from coconut oils. Consuming too many MCT's can sometimes
lead to a laxative type effect on sensitive individuals.
Oleric Acid
This fatty acid is a mono-unsaturated fatty acid found in very high levels in
extra virgin olive oil. It has been shown to reduce harmful cholesterol levels
in the blood.
